Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea Wins APC Book Award
November 10, 2008
Elizabeth Schmidt’s 2007 book, Cold War and Decolonization in Guinea, 1946–1958, is the winner of the African Political Science Group’s Best Book Award. Schmidt’s study provides the historical context behind Guinea’s bold 1958 decision for independence. The APCG is an affiliate of the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, and African Studies Association. The award will be given at the ASA meeting in Chicago.

Thorndike Book a Finalist for ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award

The Last of His Mind: A Year in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, by John Thorndike, has been named a finalist in ForeWord magazine’s Book of the Year Award in the autobiography/memoir category. Finalists were chosen from 1,400 entries in 60 categories and represent independent publishing at its best. Winners will be determined by a panel of librarians and booksellers and announced at the May 25 BookExpo America show in New York City. The Last of His Mind was also named one of the best memoirs of 2009 by The Washington Post.
Tate Memoir Nominated for Weatherford Award

Linda Tate’s 2009 memoir, Power in the Blood: A Family Narrative has been nominated for the 2009 Weatherford Award in the nonfiction category. The Weatherford Award, sponsored by the Appalachian Studies Association, is given to published works that “best illuminate the challenges, personalities, and unique qualities of the Appalachian South.” Weatherford winners will be announced at the 2010 Appalachian Studies Conference on March 19th. In Power in the Blood, Tate alternates personal memoir with imagined family narrative in journeys that traverse both physical and psychic terrain.

Dr. Omar Ali, author of In the Balance of Power: Independent Black Politics and Third-Party Movements in the United States (2008), has appeared on CNN-TV three times in the past couple of weeks as part of an Independent voter panel analyzing the recent political scene. "People are angry,” Ali commented on the Feb. 14th broadcast. "Anger will come and go, but there is an underlying frustration that the American people are feeling and that's a combination of being angry and not being able to do something about that anger because of the bipartisan structure of our political system.”

Omar Ali, the author of In the Balance of Power: Independent Black Politics and Third-Party Movements in the Unitd States (2008), is scheduled for a roundtable appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Friday, January 29th, at 10 p.m. The topic of the discussion will be independent politics and a State of the Union follow-up.
